If you’re a member of Twitter, you can get told when new stories turn up on Brisbane Is Home – Just make Brisbane Is Home your friend on Twitter, follow the updates, and you’ll get an SMS every time a new story turns up here at BiH.
You’ll have to send one SMS to an American number to sign up, so check how much this will cost you on your plan. I’m on Virgin’s prepaid BeanCounter plan, and the foreign SMS only cost me 25c.
What is Twitter? Well, it’s a way to let friends know what you are doing via SMS. You send an update just once, and everyone who is following you can see what you just said. You can make it so only chosen friends can read your messages, too.
I don’t think it’s going to be that interesting listening to most people just talk about their day, but if you were planning for five or six people to go out somewhere – or even five or six hundred – it would be good for keeping in touch.
People are also doing interesting things - for instance Tom Morris has set up Twitter accounts that tell you when there are delays on the different lines on the London Underground, or the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit (in the San Francisco region))
I’ve also got a personal twitter account where I post about interesting stuff I find on the net, usually. I always post links, so you can follow up if you want.
Let me know if you can think of any interesting ways to use Twitter.
And you might want to read the Twitter Wiki which has a bit more background info on ways people are using Twitter.
