I would have won a quiz night once if I’d known this at the time.

Queensland’s RSPCA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has warned people not to give left-over chocolate to pets.

Even 50 grammes of chocolate (less than two ounces) can ‘kill a dog’.

A lady being interviewed on ABC NewsRadio also said that onions are bad for dogs as well - they can give dogs anaemia (dangerously low iron levels).

So there you go. No chocolate for your pets!

Apparrently chocolate isn’t good for cockatoos either. My mum said when she was a kid she fed some to a cockatoo and it started foaming at the mouth.

I guess dog chocolate must be a bit different (for dogs, probably not cockatoos). Interesting…

This advice is fine if you don’t have small children. If you do, you find that the children invariably feed the chocolate to the aging dog, which said dog will readily accept! And our dog eats onions as well, and she’s lived for 13 years - so what gives with these stories???!!!

Wes, the lady on the radio from the RSPCA didn’t give figures about onions, so I guess dogs are pretty robust. And yep, the advice doesn’t take children into account.
