Brisbane’s Ekka starts thursday. Brisbane central train station has a petting zoo set up to promote the agricultural exhibition. Tickets can be purchased at queensland rail stations and a loop train will be running every 15-20 minutes to drop people at the gates. Brisbane’s Ekka public holiday is wednesday 15 august, but surrounding shires have their holidays on other days next week.
In addition to animals, the Ekka has a range of art, craft, cooking, commercial and various other displays, popular music concerts, rides and the best strawberry ice cream.

Tonight, I’ll be trying something new-ish. I’ll be using the Twitter channel for Brisbane Is Home to do a live call of the first twenty-odd minutes of the Rugby League match between the Brisbane Broncos and the North Queensland Cowboys. This “microdocumentary” of Brisbane freerunner Luke Quadrio appeared on YouTube a month ago, made by Brisbane YouTuber sorrymack.
Quadrio says that freerunning is like parkour, but it “likes to use a lot more flair and style moves”

Thanks to ourbrisbane.com, I just found out about Expressions Dance Company’s community dance classes at the Judith Wright Centre in Fortitude Valley.
These are casual classes - you don’t have to sign up for a whole term, just turn up - you don’t even need to book. Classes are on the 4th floor of the Judith Wright Centre - take the lift and go down the corridor. Showers are available, and wear loose clothing, with socks or bare feet.
Classes start at 6pm. Beginners classes are on Monday and Tuesday, and intermediate/advanced classes are on Wednesday. It’s $9.50 per class, or $8.50 if you have a concession card. Cash only. The classes run from late January to late November.
