Brisbane River Panorama - the broad sweep, and the detail

River Panorama - from the Merivale Bridge, crossing the Brisbane River between Brisbane and South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, looking towards Milton and Toowong

I took some photos yesterday, and when I looked at this one from the Merivale rail bridge, I was amazed at how much detail the camera was able to pick up:

River Panorama expanded - from the Merivale Bridge, crossing the Brisbane River between Brisbane and South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, looking towards Milton and Toowong

Anticlockwise from the bottom, I saw a bike path next to the river, an exit from the Riverside Expressway to Hale St with the Fourex Brewery in the background, the giant flagpole on Coronation Drive in Milton, and Oxley’s on the River restaurant.

Brisbane Traffic - Motorbike Accident On The Corner Of My Street This Morning

I walked out of my flat this morning to go to work, and saw flashing emergency lights down the end of my street, on the corner of Montpelier Rd, Cowlishaw St and Cintra Rd in Bowen Hills. Looks like a big flat-bed tow truck had hit a motorbike.

Click here to see a Google Map of the exact location.

I checked with the Police Media unit (thanks to Tom for spending 10 minutes having a proper dig through all his records for me) and the Queensland Ambulance Service media unit - there were no injuries reported and no-one was transported to hospital.

This corner is insane. Cintra Rd has a stop sign on it, but it is constantly ignored and cars fly through the corner, turning left onto Montpelier Rd. If you are coming out of Cowlishaw St you can be in real danger - I have been, twice, a few metres away from a serious accident.

For more detail, click on the pictures and you’ll be taken to the Flickr set, where you can see much larger versions.

Frankly, Brisbane traffic is insane, and it isn’t geting any better or safer.

Photos of St Patrick’s Day Parade in Brisbane

Apologies for the lack of posts this week, I’ve not been well.

As usual, you can see them in large sizes, watch a slideshow of the photos or download them for your own use.

St John’s Anglican Cathedral, Ann St, Brisbane City

Because Brisbane is built on hills, there are some steep slopes right in the middle of town. In particular, it is a very steep climb from Adelaide St to Ann St. This means that the back of St John’s Anglican Cathedral looks down onto Adelaide St from on top of a 5-metre high cliff. You wouldn’t even notice it unless you bothered to look up all the time. Click here to see the exact location of the cathedral.

[BTW, Anglican = Episcopalian, if you’re from the USA].

Keep reading to see 19 more photos of the outside of the Cathedral.

Rugby League in Brisbane - photos and video as Souths Logan Magpies play Sydney’s Wests Tigers in National Rugby League trial game at Davies Park, West End

On Saturday 24th February, I went to Davies Park in West End, an inner suburb of Brisbane (click here to see the exact location), to catch the trial match between National Rugby League side Wests Tigers (from Sydney) and the Queensland Cup team Souths Logan Magpies.

There were three games on Saturday - a colts game (young, up and coming players) and a FOGS (A-grade citywide) match, both between the Magpies and local team Easts Tigers. Then there was the main game between Souths and Wests.

I couldn’t get many good pictures of the main game, because my camera isn’t too good in the dark. (I’m saving up for a new one, let me know if you want to help me buy one that costs about $A 450).

But here’s 30-odd pictures including some of the early games, and a short video including some of the later game. Just keep reading…

By the way, this article would never have happened if not for Shaun at sidelined, the Australian sports blog.

Photoblogging Brisbane’s New Farm Park - 8 types of roses, sculptures and memorials, huge seed pods, silver gulls and private poetry at the Powerhouse

Private Poetry sign and entrance to Stores Building - New Farm Park and Powerhouse, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 070202

Recently, I started a group for photos of Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Newstead and Teneriffe at flickr, the photo-sharing website.

I want the group to become the first place people look for photos of that part of town, and that means I’ll have to take a lot of photos to get people noticing it.

So last Friday I went down to New Farm Park and the Powerhouse Arts Centre to take some photos.

You can read more about New Farm Park here.

You can click on that link to see Friday’s photos on a map, to see a slideshow of them, to see different sizes and to download them for yourself. You can also clickon each photo to go to its page on flickr. Or you can just keep reading here to see over 60 photos.

You can also click here to see the path I took walking through the park, starting from the New Farm ferry terminal.
